Our Hair, Our Beauty
Why does HAIR have to be such a big part of who we are? Even at birth, the first words (except in breach births!) are, "wow, look at all the hair!" And throughout infancy and childhood there are comments and activities involving our hair. How much or how little hair a baby has, always prompts visitors to recall something about THEIR baby's hair stories. If it's thick or thin, straight or curly, light or dark....there will be many years of dealing with HAIR! Good hair defines good health!
Women Hair Loss
Roughly half of all women experience some thinning hair during their menopausal years. Two-thirds of post-menopausal women deal with thinning hair or bald spots.
Most people naturally experience some thinning hair as they get older. But age, changing hormones and heredity cause some to lose more hair than others. The result can be partial or total baldness, known as alopecia, which is a disease causing hair loss.
Men Bald Easily
Men are far more likely than women to have thinning hair and baldness as they age. "Male-pattern baldness" is the receding hairline and thinning hair on top of the head. It's typically genetic trait. The male pattern baldness also occurs due to the male hormone causing hair loss more apparent in men.
Female Hair Loss
But there's also a "female-pattern baldness" also inherited that can cause modest to significant thinning hair in women as they age. The thinning hair can first become apparent in women by ages 25 to 30. We lose about 100 hair a day, and if we do lose any more than that, we will be suffering from thinning hair.
The most prevalent type of thinning hair among women is female pattern thinning, known medically as Androgenetic Alopecia (genetic, diffuse thinning hair). But there are many other reasons for womens thinning hair, including menopause-related hormonal imbalances, postpartum/ stress-related shedding, chemotherapy, and Alopecia Areata (spotty thinning hair). Some thinning hair is actually self-induced: The use of harsh chemical relaxers (Scarring Alopecia), or tight hair braiding (Traction Alopecia) can permanently damage the hair follicle. Try to avoid tight ponytails and braids as these can seriously harm your hair.
Female Cannot Use Propecia
Fertile women are not allowed to use (or even touch) finasteride (Propecia) for fear of the severe birth defects it causes. This is probably a blessing in disguise, as the side-effects (loss of libido, lip swelling, breast engorgement, birth defects) are not pleasant. Finasteride is completely ineffective in reversing thinning hair for postmenopausal women.
Tips for Strengthening Hair
Infusion of stinging nettle, 2-4 cups a day, strengthens hair and checks falling hair with its superb supplies of protein, B vitamins, vitamin E, iron, and other minerals. Regular use restores thickness, body, shine and sheen to hair. If you have any infusion left over, pour it on your head and rub it into your scalp for faster results.
